How Can You Tell If You Need To Lose Weight?
Are you one of the many millions of men and women who look in the mirror daily and say to themselves “I must lose that excess weight”? Practically everybody has done this at some time and in many instances you really do need to lose some weight. However, this is not always the case and so how do you know whether or not you really do need to go on a diet?
One great problem with weight gain is that it has a tendency to creep up on you when you are not paying attention and this is increasingly being witnessed particularly in countries such as North America where obesity has now become an epidemic. Because however your weight often rises slowly over several months, you generally simply do not notice the increase in terms of changes to your appearance and are only conscious of it when you jump on the bathroom scales. Therefore, it is good practice to get yourself into the habit of checking your weight on a regular basis (about once each month is normally sufficient) and when you see that it has risen noticeably then it is time to lose that excess weight.
There are differences of opinion about just what constitutes obesity but for our purposes here if your weight has increased by in excess of perhaps thirty pounds or so then you are most likely heading for obesity and a myriad of health problems which accompany it.
The next sign that you should to lose weight is when a friend tells you that you are overweight. Now it is possible that you will be offended when a friend informs you that you need to go on a diet but remember that they probably found it hard to pluck up the courage to tell you and are also practically always showing a heartfelt concern for your state of health and not passing comment about the way you look.
Another sign that you are putting on too much weight is seen when you begin experiencing difficulty with normally easy tasks like climbing a flight of stairs or running to catch a bus and find yourself getting short of breath. Of course this is not necessarily the result of carrying too much weight and could be caused by other health problems, however you would be surprised at just how often the cause is indeed weight. If this happens your body is beginning to sound its alarm bells and these should most definitely not be ignored.
One last and very common, although frequently ignored, sign of weight gain is quite simply discovering that your clothes no longer fit as they used to. A bit of a tight waistband after Christmas is usual for many of us but when it continues getting tighter and tighter and you find yourself buying bigger and bigger clothes every time you go shopping then it is time to diet before your growing waist stretches both your clothes and your store card.
These are of course just some examples of the numerous signs that you are overweight to the point at which you need to take steps to correct the situation. Excessive weight has a tendency to creep up on you slowly and it is all too easy to simply not notice it at all. However the secret to looking and feeling good is quite simple – know your ideal weight and jump on the bathroom scales once in a while to ensure that you are not getting too heavy.
Obesity, and particularly teenage obesity, today is a rising problem and one which has serious medical complications. It is also wise therefore to learn how to calculate BMI which is the medical indicator for obesity.
