The Alkaline Diet – A New Approach For Weight Loss

In other articles, I have talked about the benefits of the alkaline diet for boosting your energy level and preventing or even resolving chronic health problems, including osteoporosis and kidney stones. This time, I would like to say a few words about losing weight, a topic of concern to many people as obesity becomes a worldwide epidemic.

In order to determine whether or not the alkaline diet is an effective approach for weight loss, we first need to understand the principles of losing weight. Then we can decide whether or not the alkaline diet measures up to those standards. In the end, all diets boil down to two basic approaches. One approach is to count calories, and the other approach is to avoid specific kinds of food, such as meat, carbs, or soft drinks. Both approaches can work, and by the same mechanism: causing you to consume fewer calories than you expend through exercise and metabolic activity.

In a way, it doesn’t matter whether you follow the alkaline diet, the South Beach Diet, or the cookie diet — to lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than you take in. The question, then, is whether the alkaline diet will be effective at creating a caloric deficit.

The answer is that it depends. On the plus side, the alkaline diet emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables, which are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, but low in fat and simple sugars. This nutritional profile makes these foods ideally suited for anyone who wants to lose weight.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that you will not inevitably lose weight on an alkaline diet. This is because some alkaline foods, such as almonds and avocados, are high in fat and calories. If you go hog wild on these foods, you could theoretically maintain the same weight, or even gain weight on an alkaline diet. In short, moderation is key.
